PHOENIX, AZ. — Local theatre fan Derek Sherman decided for his birthday party this year, he would put on a site specific production of The SpongeBob Musical in his family’s backyard swimming pool. Shockingly, he did not receive one RSVP.
“I just don’t get it,” Derek said while throwing out the snacks he had left out for guests. “I thought it was perfect. People love SpongeBob. And pools! Right? I mean, I invited all of my friends and the entire local theatre department, and still, no one showed up. The worst part is, I actually paid for the production rights,so technically we run for another week. Come see it, I guess?”
Derek’s mother, Gina, who served as the director, choreographer, and underwater stunt coordinator for the show, had an idea as to why it was a flop.
“Derek is never gonna make it in this business. Never," she exclaimed while framing one of his baby photos. "When he asked me to direct his show, I promised him I would do the best I could, which meant keeping him far away from a named role. Fortunately, I was able to find local talent, although we did have to fly our SpongeBob out from New York."
"If you ask me, Fish #3 was plenty generous of a role for Derek,” she continued. “I know I’m his mother, and I will always support him, but I would rather saw my ears off with a rusty butter knife than listen to him sing. I gotta do what’s best for my show - I mean his show.”
Levi Hayes, Derek’s best friend and former high school Drama Club Co-President, had this to say about the party.
“Oh yeah! I was totally gonna go to that. But then the rest of the old drama club invited me to see the Wicked movie for the 28th time and so I did that. Derek’s my best friend, but like hell I’m missing Jonathan Bailey in those little boots.”
Sherman is not discouraged, however, as he plans to try again next year with a production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, performed in the Supercuts down the street.
