CRANBURY, Conn. — Some members of Cranbury Memorial High School’s cast of Chicago have been excited to learn that the third biggest city in the US just so happens to share a name with their show.
“I was just hanging out with my friends, spinning my globe,” explained Shelby Johnstone, secretary of Thespian Troupe 1105. “When I suddenly noticed a city in Illinois named 'Chicago.' I couldn’t believe it – I knew they made a movie out of the musical, but a whole town?!”
Johnstone's friend, Kathy Friedman, is taking a more hands-on approach to the news.
“I’m trying to plan a trip there!” shouted Friedman, while typing on a laptop covered in Roxie Hart stickers. “Maybe we could try to watch a trial there, that would be a slay. Wait a second, did you know they have theaters in Chicago? Oh my God, do you think we could watch Chicago IN Chicago? Okay, sorry, I think I need to lie down. My brain is hurting.”
Gerry Peters, who’s playing Amos in the production, has a different take on the newly discovered little hamlet.
“I’m not 100% sure this place is real. Maybe Shelby’s globe was just merch for Chicago?” questioned Peters while also wondering if Chicago's two major league baseball teams are simply another hoax. “I always thought the point of the musical was that Chicago was kind of a Brigadoon-esque thing. It’s a fictional place that exists outside reality. Plus, it seems like a really big city, so if it was real, why wouldn’t it be the capital of Illinois? That would be like if NYC wasn’t the capital of New York.”
At press time, Troupe 1105 plan to take a virtual tour of The Art Institute of Chicago in preparation for their show, as this reporter eagerly awaits the day they learn about Hamilton, MA.
